Course: MTC #103-21
The Importance of Addressing Social and Emotional Learning in our Classrooms (Grades K – 12)
Instructor: Martine Laventure and Jamie Carter-Jorif
Description: We are proposing to teach a 5-hour MTC course that will be divided into two sessions of 2.5 hours each. One class will be held at Davison Avenue and one will be held at Maurice W. Downing. School social workers Martine Laventure and Jamie Carter-Jorif will co-teach the two classes. Teachers will be provided with the necessary tools to recognize and support the Whole Child. This course will focus on the following five areas of social and emotional learning:
Expected Outcome for Teachers: It’s our hope that after our training the staff will become better equipped to address SEL concerns in their classrooms. It’s also our hope that teachers will be able to better identify signs from their students. Through role play activities, our staff will have real-life scenarios presented to them in order to test their skills that they have learned during the course.
Expected Outcome for Students: The past three months have certainly changed our outlook on what the education of children looks like. It has become increasingly more evident that educating children involves more than academic instruction. It is our hope that after this course for staff, our students will have even more resources available to them in their time of need.
