Expected Outcome for Teachers: Teachers will understand their influence on a student’s college application process.
Expected Outcome for Students: Students will benefit from teachers’ understanding of the attributes they MUST develop in preparation for their future college destination and/or career path.
Next Generation Learning Standards to be addressed: Teacher influence on the development of critical 21st century life skills and how this applies to a student’s future in college or career.

Description:
- Use of interactive games, hands-on activities, and college application online platforms will be used to identify ways ALL K – 12 teachers impact their students’ future “college and career” application readiness and admissions success.
- Explore student attributes that college admissions committees look for in students’ applications. What do they value most?
- Examine what colleges mean by “Holistic Review” and the ways classroom teachers have critical influence.
- Understand the way confidentiality is protected under FERPA. Learn the ways all teachers and school personnel are protected. How does that differ from students? Parents? Community Members?
- Familiarize yourself with the most widely-used platforms for students to apply to college. We will explore both the Common Application and/or Coalition Application and identify sections that are enhanced due to classroom teacher influence.
- Standardized tests - SAT? ACT? AP? State Assessments? Regents Exams? How teachers naturally prepare students over time.
- Letters of Recommendation – most critical part of a student’s application! Learn how they are used, the impact they have on college decisions, and best practices for writing meaningful letters on behalf of the student.
